Madre de Dios, Peru (Amazon)
In the winter of 2009, I left the NYC winter to spend a month in the sweltering heat of the Amazon jungle of Southern Peru. I was the artist-in-residence at CICRA, a biological research station located on the Madre de Dios River. The research station, a five to ten hour boat ride from the nearest road, embodied a sense of isolation and submersion in the elements. This sensation was most profound when travelling on the river at dawn. The river was mostly devoid of human presence but was instead characterized by the shifting colors and fog of the early morning sunrise.
The paintings in this series were completed after I returned to NY by using oil sketches done on site, memories and photographs from the residency. All paintings in the series are done with oil on panel. They range from 5×7 inches to 12×24 inches.
